Yoga for Beginner

Yoga for Beginner and More

Yoga means to bind together -- variously joining sun and moon, left and right, male and female, and any number of yins and yangs -- through ascetic techniques of meditation and exercise. The goal is physical and mental balance.

About 5 million people in the United States do some yoga. Dance and stretching exercise classes usually have parts and pieces that come directly from yoga. If you ever go to a physical therapist, he or she may give you therapeutic exercises that are yoga postures.

If you have not practiced yoga before, our Yoga for Beginner guide will explain all you need to start.

How to Start

Yoga is fun, healthy, and calming. It's a wise way handed down over several thousands of years. There is little danger in yoga, and even a little progress brings with it freedom and peace of mind.

yoga for beginnerYou can get audio or video tapes that give breathing instruction and teach relaxation techniques at health food stores, bookstores, and by mail order. It's probably fine to learn breath and relaxation from a tape or booklet. It is also good idea to find skilled teacher. Yoga instructors can make corrections, caution you when necessary, and help you to adapt poses.

It is advisable to try out a few different styles until you find the one that suits you. Just to give you an idea where you can start looking, here is brief outline of the practises of few of the most popular schools of Yoga.

Ashtanga or Power Yoga Workout: It is a dynamic, flowing sequence of set poses that links the movements with breath. It can be a physically demanding for beginners.

Bikram: The practice is rigorous and makes really good workout. The classes tend to be sweaty, as they are held in room heated to about 85 F/30 C. This extreme heat aids flexibility and suppleness.

Integral: It is a gentle style of yoga that integrates a variety of techniques. It encourages students to work within their own limits, and to develop awareness throughout the practice.

Iyengar: It is the most popular form of yoga practiced in the West. The stress is on body alignment and how it is structured. The classes are detail-oriented and informative.

Kundalini: It is an ancient and esoteric practice designed to awaken the vital energy that lies dormant at the base of the spine. The primary focus of this yoga is on the breath.

Sivananda: This yoga practice incorporate poses, breathing and deep relaxation. The classes are relaxed and gentle.

Viniyoga: This style of Hatha yoga focuses on the needs of the individual and includes poses, chanting, breathing, and meditation. All the poses are modified to suit the student.

Yoga Equipment

Most classes today now incorporate following yoga equipment:

  1. The sticky mat used to lie or stand on during the poses.
  2. The belts help beginner stretch into pose more easily.
  3. And blocks are use to support the body , or to help a beginner achieve a strenuous pose more easily.
Although most people can exercise safely, exercise involves some risks. To shift the benefit-to-risk ratio in your favour, take these precautions:
  • Have a medical exam before you begin your exercise program
  • Always warm up and cool down.
  • Don't exercise outdoors when the weather is too hot and humid, or too cold.
Committed practitioners claim yoga leads to intuitive awareness, spiritual harmony, perfect concentration. Others use it to lose weight or quit smoking. Some just like the lift they get from yoga asanas (positions) better than breaking into a sweat with pushups. In any case, it can't hurt, if done in moderation and with proper guidance.
